This is a book for anyone who recognizes the following behaviors and struggles – and for those concerned about a loved one with these behaviors.
Is this you, or someone you care about?
Have you felt shame over your “hiding, lying, or sneaking” behavior with sugar and carbs?
How many times have you tried to diet, only to feel like you’ve failed?
How many times have you lost weight, only to return to sugar and ultra-processed foods – and gain it all back… and more?
Do you wake up feeling hungover – not from alcohol, but from sugar?
Have you ever, quietly of course, wondered, with fear: “Am I a sugar addict?”
What is wrong with me? Everyone else seems to be able to stick to a plan but not me. I’m a loser; I have no character. I eat because I’m sad, depressed, exhausted, irritated, have anxiety…
But what if it’s the other way around? Could it be because you eat certain foods that your brain and body are severely imbalanced – you have the wrong fuel mix – and you become sad, irritated, feel miserable and eat more?
If you want to understand why you behave like this, here are the explanations.
If you are a professional, have you been frustrated when your clients don’t do what you tell them? Do you help people with dieting obsession, giving great advice and food plans, but they can’t stick to them, or simply disappear after a while?
This book will give you the answers and explanations for why they behave erratically – offering insight into their loss of control over certain foods and how their brain is hijacked.
It is time to understand the mechanisms behind this, to learn the right tools to help, and to conquer stigma and misunderstanding.
While parts of the book have been translated from earlier material, much of the content has been substantially reworked and rewritten. There are also several new sections, the book has been updated with new research and insights, and most of the case stories are entirely new.
Finally Someone Gets It – Real Hope for Sugar Addicts
I’ve read a lot of books about sugar and addiction. This one will be a go-to resource. Bitten doesn’t lecture. She doesn’t hand you another list of rules or a meal plan. What she does do is explain the actual biology of what sugar is doing to your brain and why you can’t just ”moderate” your way out of this. She names the lie we’ve all believed about moderation. She connects the dots between what you’re eating and why you feel the way you do. And she does it with the understanding of someone who has actually lived this.
The part that hit me hardest was recognizing that my ”lack of willpower” was never the real problem. The real problem was that my brain had been hijacked. Once I understood that, everything shifted. Recovery suddenly felt possible instead of just like failing at the same thing over and over again. This book is essential if you’re struggling with sugar and carb addiction and tired of the shame cycle. It’s also invaluable if you’re a coach, counselor, or anyone trying to help other women through this. Bitten gives you the framework to understand not just what’s happening, but why the typical advice has failed so many of us. 5 stars. No hesitation. Christine Trimpe
Helps you understand your brain and body and how they are connected
If you’ve ever wondered why sugar cravings can feel so hard to control, this book is definitely worth checking out. Sugar Bomb in Your Brain by Bitten Jonsson, RN, takes a deeper look at how sugar affects the brain, cravings, habits, and the way we think about food. What I really like is that it doesn’t just focus on “eat less sugar.” It helps you understand why you crave it in the first place and gives you a different perspective on breaking the cycle. If you’re trying to cut back on sugar, improve your relationship with food, or simply understand what sugar may be doing to your brain, this is a really interesting read.
Definitely one I’d recommend adding to your reading list if you’re working on healthier habits! Becca Sharp
